Research Project Topic

  • Part 8: Documenting the Research Paper
  • Part 9: Writing the Research Paper
    • Introduction (see handout on the Assignments page for review)
      • Proposal---but update with any methods modifications, change to past tense, and insert photos with figure titles (and refer to figures within the text of the narrative).
      • Heavily MLA documented.
    • Data & Results (pgs. 72-74)
      • 1st paragraph describes how the data was organized for analysis (What you did in the computer lab last week!) Can also explain why these methods were chosen instead of others.
      • In the narrative talk about the data holistically, either by group, or by quantitative/qualitative characteristic, but NOT by day. Organize your presentation of the groups in a matter that makes sense. Example: The group that had the most change talked about first, with the group that had the least amount of change described last.
      • Allow graphs to show the day-to-day data (if it helps your analysis)
      • Use qualitative data to supplement quantitative...keep group discussions together (ie don't have a page of just qualitative data displayed separately from quantitative.)
      • NEVER explain WHY in this section
    • Analysis & Conclusion (pgs. 75-76)
      • Introductory paragraph: Hypothesis supported or not, and explain reasons...becomes the "thesis" statement.
      • Heavily MLA documented.
      • At least one paragraph per explanation of results.
      • Address the limitation of the study: admit variables you couldn't keep constant, problems that occurred during the experiment that may have impacted results.
      • To what degree does the data in your study show a relationship between the IV and DV? "Based on this study...the IV does (not) influence the DV. This is because.....However, further research...."
      • Extend the study: What could future researchers do to further this study?
      • Importance of the study: Why it matters?
    • Personal Reflection (pgs 77)
      • Groups: If two people worked together, they each write their own personal reflection...
      • Can use "I"
      • Add this question that MUST be addressed
        • How had completed this research project changed your view of how science is studied?
        • Describe what changes you would make if you were to guide high school students through a project of this scope?
    • Writing an Abstract (pg. 78)
    • Writing Tips (pg. 79-80)
    • Transitions, taboo words, overused words (pg. 81-82)
  • Practice: Sample Student Writing...What can you fix? & Organizing the Data and Results section.

Assignments to have completed by next week:

  • Due Tues. Nov. 9: Peer Edit 2 peer's graphs, and post to document's page.
  • Write the Paper!!!!!! Use the Rubric on page 103-104 (bottom page number) as your guide, but ignore the number values, although they do represent proportionally how much each section is worth!
  • Bring with you to class TWO PAPER copies of your complete research paper. We will spend class time peer editing.
